Stop Abuse: Be Good to Women
  By Barbara Ann

Every 9 seconds a woman is abused. There are 4 million women assaulted each year by their partner.

March is Women’s History Month and many are concerned about assault on women, a problem that appears to be escalating in our community and in society.

Mr. Brad Sanders, a popular, syndicated radio personality for over 23 years and host of the nationally syndicated radio program, “On the Phone with Ti-Rone” is in a unique position to address the crisis of African-American male abuse directed at African-American women.         Mr. Sanders had the opportunity to listen to callers to his radio show five days a week. He noticed the concerns of women for many years. He also heard men disrespect women, undervalue relationships with their girlfriend, or wife.  Over the years, Mr. Sanders has addressed the concerns of his audience on the phone and with emails.

One problem, Sanders states, “the Africa-American male has no value in his relationship with a female. He plays a non-supportive role in the relationship. He misses out on intimate communication with the female, who is actually his helpmate. This dilemma has caused poor interaction between them in the relationship.”

“My wife helps me with typing, tending to the home, contributing her opinion in support of my work; I couldn’t do it without her,” Sanders continues. “You’re not able to see that help she gives me, yet I get all the credit.”

Sanders believes changing the mindset of men toward women is crucial to improving the relationship between the man and woman. The male is privileged, more powerful in society than the woman, he feels, yet the man doesn’t see the woman as his support. Sanders thinks that the men who abuse women feel a lack of self-respect, lack of self-esteem, and lack good feelings about themselves.

Listening to the concerns of women and the negative, disrespectful comments about them from men in his audience prompted him to try to find solutions. “All the nasty, painful, humiliation suffered by women in these relationships is because the abuser, does not know how to respect himself,” Mr. Sanders said.

Many times, the abuser will try to isolate the victim from friends, family, peers because he is insecure; he has a fear of being replaced. There is insecurity, a lack of confidence, a feeling of inadequate masculinity that makes men control women.

"The current situation involving two of our brightest young stars is indicative of a crisis that is effecting us at large.  Women are the foundation of the family unit.   It is important for us as men to never forget that.  When we degrade our women, we are degrading ourselves.  It has always been my intention to be a constant reminder to my fellow man that we are nothing without our women.  We need to be good to women, every day, and hopefully "Be Good To Women Day" will inspire that continual action," states Sanders.

On Thursday, March 24th 2009 at 7:00 pm, “Be Good To Women Day” A Prayer Vigil will be held at Bryant Temple AME Church in Los Angeles, Ca, an annual tribute to the African-American Woman.
